The Gift of Running: A Reflection on National Running Day

Image
For years, this blog ( The Anti-Running Runner ) has been a place for me to document my love/hate relationship with running. As a new mom, I've struggled to keep up with posting regular blogs, but I'm still running. After going through back and heel injuries for almost two years, plus new baby, running now looks a little different for me. I'm no longer training for half marathons. Not yet. I hope to get back there eventually, but my focus has been running between 3-5 miles about 3 times a week (sometimes walking/jogging intervals). If you've pushed a jogging stroller, you might relate to the sensation that while pushing that stroller for 3 miles, it feels like I've gone farther. It's also hot hot hot right now. I also don't have as much time for running as I used to now that I have a baby. When hubby and I run together, he pushes the jogging stroller. That's also a gift for me to have stroller-free running moments. Here we are near downto...

Happy National Running Day!

I didn't realize it was National Running Day until I saw people posting about it on Facebook. Because I started meeting with a friend, Terry, each Wednesday morning to run, we already celebrated NRD without knowing it! These days my running averages three to ten miles about three times a week. It's that time of year where starting after sunrise becomes more and more challenging. When I do manage to crawl out of bed before sunrise (like today), it makes a huge difference. This was a wonderfully cool morning. Terry and I had a great time chatting, getting to know each other better, lifting each other up in encouragement, and praising God for the gift of another day to run. If I get a late start, I still try to run consistently with my planned goal of every other day. So my punishment for hitting snooze is suffering through the heat. A few pics from a late start a couple weeks ago at the pier: The pier building is closed but there's still a water fountain. Lo...

My Cavles Are Burning & I See A Turtle

I'm EXTREMELY thankful for the advice to take it slower and slower and not do a mile too soon with the Vibram FiveFinger shoes. Saturday, first jog was 1/2 a mile (vlogged it on last post). Felt okay. My lower back and my feet muscles more than anything were sore. I think the shoes force better running posture. Sunday, jogged 1/2 a mile again, and luckily had a friend (Thanks, Big!) warn that I might be going too far too soon. Brain computes this: half a mile, too far? But I could already tell feet and leg muscles including calves were getting more sore. So I knew Big was right. But I did stop at 0.2 miles because I saw this little guy in the middle of the road in my neighborhood. Luckily, no cars were coming. I said hello and asked if he wanted to go back into the canal. He didn't move, so I had to "chase" him. When I started shuffling my feet behind him he did a u-turn. He moved pretty quickly then. He jumped the curb and got into the grass. ...
