Vlog: Finger Shoes!

I finally bought a pair of Vibram FiveFingers. It took me some time because they don't carry them in many stores nearby. I didn't want to buy them online without trying them on because they are in European sizes and I wanted to get a feel for them.

In downtown St. Pete, I found them at a place called In Search of Balance. It's a great little shop owned by two runners. It's on 3rd Ave North really close to Beach Drive, right behind Parkshore Grill. I love supporting local shop owners, and they were extremely knowledgeable about the shoes. They recommended Bikila for me. I chose the Bikila LS because I liked the drawstring better than the Velcro strap.

After trying on a few pairs, I found the ones that were just right for me.

They do feel a little weird at first. And they are difficult to get on because they are so snug and my toes don't know where to go without help.

Ringo and Lance are checking them out to make sure they are okay. I think they approve.

I'm really excited that I can still use my Nike+ sensor. I wasn't sure because there are no shoelaces, but as you can see, I found a way to make it work.

I did my first jog and it was strange. It really felt like I was barefoot, and also I could tell my leg and foot muscles were working harder than usual.

The vlog is a little bouncy during my half mile jog.

The verdict: I like them.

Before now, I talked to quite a few people who wear these shoes and love them. Thanks, friends, for all the advice (Nathan and Big and Vivian and I'm sure there are others).

Hubby and my friend, Carrie, are now thinking of trying them out. I say go for it!

  1. Yeah, be very careful starting out with them. A half mile may even be more than you should do. It's really easy to pull muscles in those when first starting out. Then it puts you back weeks as you wait for them to heal. I pulled a muscle in my arch when I first started out with them, and was worthless for weeks. That sucks, don't do what I did.

Do you notice that you have to run differently than you usually do? Almost like you're tiptoeing through your run? It puts way more strain on your calves as well. All muscles that you have to condition. I'd take it as slow as you can. Run in them for short runs and do the rest of your mileage in your regular shoes.

And keep telling us how it goes.

  2. Big, yes, thanks! I can tell that I run differently. I was a sprinter in high school so I tend to run more on the balls of my toes, but as the years have gone by that has become less and less. It's sort of like going back to being a sprinter in form, though not in speed. My feet even more than my calves seem to be sore. I thought I would be able to do a mile today but even before reading your post I realized that wouldn't be a good idea. It's actually kind of nice to know that I need to keep the mileage really low because it's so hot right now.
