What Do You Carry On Your Run?

Most of the time, I just want to run and not be burdened with anything in my hands or on my person. I'm more of a minimal runner in that sense.

The Essentials for a Run

So what do I HAVE to have for a run? Technically just my shoes, socks, sports bra, shorts, and a top. But I do love listening to podcasts and audiobooks while I run, so usually I'll have my iPod with me. If my shorts don't have pockets, that requires something to carry the iPod if I don't want it in my sweaty hand the whole time.

There is one essential element for every runner: Water. Generally, I'll scout out my route ahead of time with planned stops at water fountains. In Florida especially, water stops are crucial, but with my planned routes, I don't have to carry it. Drinking plenty before and after also helps.

To Carry or Not To Carry?

Yes, I've tried the Hipster belt, and I really do like it. I don't notice it, truly. I haven't loaded it up with more than my phone at this point, so that will be a true test once I do that. Again, I like the "less is more" philosophy during a run.

I've tried running with a water bottle belt, and it's not my favorite. Too much bounce. When I wore an armband with my iPod inside, I had this strange burning sensation on my arm. It irritated me enough that I took the armband off and haven't tried one since.

I have used a smaller belt that fit my phone, but whenever I tried to add anything else (such as keys, gel), the bounce becomes noticeable.

What About You?

What do you take with you on your run? How much can you handle carrying? Are you like me and prefer less to more?

  1. I'm a bit like you - minimalist. I'll take my Spibelt with a few lollies and some tissues on longer runs when I know I'll need fuel. But generally it's just me and a car key. There's always water bubblers where I run so that's one less thing to worry about.

    1. Water bubblers sound so much more fun than water fountains!

  2. I like having my camel back hydration belt, it carries a water bottle and two pouches will carry everything I need. There is bounce, but I prefer the security over no bounce and my hands are free!

    1. I do have a Camelbak, too. When I do anything longer than 10 miles, I usually wear it because I need more water than the fountains along the route.
